Aspiring time travelers, here is an epic destination for mythical escapes while on sailing holidays in Turkey! The real site of ancient Troy invites you to a fascinating journey through time in Canakkale: following Odysseus’ adventures, visit the ancient ruins of Troy, ride the Trojan Horse and relive the myth!
World renowned by Homer in his Iliad, the city of Troy was conquered by the Greeks, due to Odysseus inspiration: Odysseus thought of building a great wooden horse (the horse being the emblem of Troy), hiding an elite force inside, and fooling the Trojans into wheeling the horse into the city as a trophy.
Odysseus' plan called for one man to remain outside the horse; he would act as though the Greeks had abandoned him, leaving the horse as a gift for the Trojans. An inscription was engraved on the horse reading: "For their return home, the Greeks dedicate this offering to Athena”. When the Trojans led the gift in their city, the Greeks came out by night, burned the city and escaped to a nearby island. In the late 19th-century, ancient Troy was rediscovered by Heinrich Schliemann and was added to Unesco’s World Heritage List in 1998.
The "Trojan Horse" from the 2004 movie “Troy “is exhibited on the seafront of the seaside city and seaport of Canakkale. The city is also known as the base of the legendary, annually organized swim across the Hellespont, an iconic cross from Europe to Asia for expert swimmers and one of the most significant open water swims in the world, inspired by Lord Byron.
